Email viewer

Open any email file – one viewer instead of five programs

Mail Archive opens EML, MSG, winmail.dat, MBOX and PST files as well as e-invoices (XRechnung, ZUGFeRD …). Viewing is free, local and needs no account. One app for Mac and Windows, instead of hunting for a separate tool for every format.

Available on the Mac from version 1.3. The Windows version with these features is coming soon to the Microsoft Store.

Which files Mail Archive opens

Viewing is free on every plan. Adding to the archive means the email is kept in your local archive for good, and you can search it.

Comparison

One program instead of many

Opening different mail files usually means collecting several tools. Here is how they differ, fact by fact.

A dedicated MSG viewer

Often opens MSG only. For EML, winmail.dat or PST you need yet another program.

A dedicated PST viewer

Often Windows only and often paid. Mail Archive also shows PST files on a Mac, without Outlook.

Online converters

Your file is uploaded to someone else's server. Mail Archive reads it on your computer.

A separate XRechnung tool

Shows the invoice and nothing else. Mail Archive opens e-invoices and the emails they arrive with in the same app.

Beyond viewing

Viewing is just the start

Any file you open can be added to the archive. From then on it stays available and searchable. Viewing remains free; importing and permanent archiving come with Pro (€14.99, one-time).

Search

In MBOX and PST files you can filter by subject or sender while viewing. In the archive, full-text search finds every email.

Save as PDF

Single emails as PDF, for example for case files or your accountant. From Pro.

E-invoices at a glance

E-invoices are detected and shown in readable form. The overview with export for your accountant comes with Pro Plus.

A permanent archive

Free keeps up to 20 emails. With Pro you import whole EML folders, MBOX and PST files and the Apple Mail library, with no limit.

How it works

Open a file in three steps

  1. Get Mail Archive

Free from the Mac App Store or the Microsoft Store. You don't need an email account.

  2. Open the file

Choose “Open file …” or simply drag the file into the window.

  3. Read and keep going

Read the email, open or save attachments. If you want to keep it: “Add to archive”.

Privacy

No upload, no cloud

Mail Archive reads every file right on your computer. Nothing is uploaded, not even to us. That is the difference to online converters, where your email ends up on someone else's server.

  • The file stays where it is. Mail Archive does not change the original.
  • Emails you add to the archive are stored in your archive folder, in a place you choose.
  • Your data does not leave your computer – unless you connect an AI application yourself (AI access/MCP).
FAQ

Questions about the email viewer

Can I open a PST file without Outlook?

Yes. Mail Archive shows the mailbox and folders of a PST file on Mac and Windows, without Outlook. Viewing is free; importing into the archive comes with Pro. OST files are not supported.

Can I view an XRechnung without uploading it?

Yes. Open the XML file in Mail Archive and it is shown as a readable invoice, with line items and amounts. The file stays on your computer. This also works with ZUGFeRD and Factur-X PDFs.

Do I need an email account?

No. To view files you don't have to set up an email account or sign up anywhere.

What does the viewer cost?

Viewing is free and unlimited. The free version lets you add up to 20 emails to the archive. Unlimited archiving and importing whole mailboxes are included in Pro, a one-time purchase with no subscription.

Can I view an MBOX file without importing it?

Yes. Mail Archive reads the MBOX file and lists its emails. You open each one in the viewer. Only “Add to archive” imports them, which is Pro.

What happens to attachments in a winmail.dat?

Mail Archive unpacks the files inside. You can open or save them.
